Glass Beach (Fort Bragg, California)

In the early of 20th century, Fort Bragg residents threw their household garbage over the cliffs. They discarded glass, appliances and even cars. At that time, the land was owned by the Union Lumber Company and they sometimes lit fires to reduce the size of trash pile.
In 1967, the North Coast Water Quality Board and city leaders closed the area; and various cleanup programs were undertaken through years to correct the damage.
But they discarded small pieces that convert by time to a smooth, colored trinkets glass that cover the beach today.

In 2002, the California State Park system purchased the 38-acre Glass Beach property and after cleanup, it was incorporated into MacKerricher State Park. And now this beach is frequently visited by tourists.
